Beinn Eich(703m) & Doune Hill(734m)

Our local Luss hills are always a popular choice for a walk in any programme, and this was borne out today as 11 of us tramped along the track towards Edentaggart Farm, over the rickety stile, through the initial waterlogged field and onto the broad grassy east ridge of Beinn Eich.

This deceptively steep ridge has a way of raising the heartbeat, straining the legs, and subduing the conversation; thankfully the views down Glen Luss and over Loch Lomond are worthy of stopping, turning around and taking a convenient break to easy the journey to the higher slopes where the gradient finally eases somewhat as you make your way to the summit of this whaleback of a hillside. At 703m this is a fine viewpoint and a fitting reward for the effort required to gain this elevated spot.

The long, narrow horseshoe of Glen Mollochan comprises a range of tops, with Beinn Eich forming the southern point, Beinn Lochain, Doune Hill, and the un-named 701m top forming the head and Mid Hill (with arguably Beinn Dubh) on the northern point. Today, we were headed for Doune Hill at the head of the horseshoe, a fine hill with extensive views over Loch Lomond and the River Clyde.

A few showers crept over us as we made our ascent of Beinn Eich, but were clearing quickly as we descended northeast from the summit to the broad bealach at 544m en route to the summit of Beinn Lochain, at 698m a mere passing point on the way to our main objective for today, Doune Hill, with it's Trig Point marking this 734m summit. With a bit of a breeze blowing we sought a sheltered spot to the east of the Trig Point in which to settle down for a well earned lunch, and enjoy the views out over Loch Lomond, simply wonderful.

On previous visits to this hill, we had continued on over the un-named 701m top and made our return along Glen Mollochan However, this has proven to be no more than a long trudge through very wet and boggy ground, and so today we simply retraced our steps, back over Beinn Lochain, Beinn Eich and made our descent back down to Edentaggart Farm; why not, it was a beautiful day, and we kept our feet dry.

A fine walk, which, you may be surprised to find required more that 1000m of ascent to accomplish, that is quite substantial for a "wee" walk in our local hills.

Great day and wonderful company - Thanks Mike
