An Caisteal (995m) & Beinn a'Chroin (942m)
Saturday 16th August 2014
Distance: 11kms - Duration: 5hrs - Group Size: 7
Walk Leader - John
The saying goes, "If at first you don't succeed, then try, try and try again." However, in the case of doing the round of An Caisteal and Beinn a'Chroin then it may be more appropriate to say, "If at first you succeed, then don't bother trying again." Lawrie and I completed this walk on a wonderful sunny day in March 2012, and, since then I have entered it into four separate walk programmes, and not once have we managed to complete the entire circuit.
Granted, the walk planned for Sunday 30th September 2012 was never really attempted as a landslide at Inveruglas had blocked the A82 and we were unable to get to the start point; on our next attempt, on 28th April 2013 we were blown off the ridge at 800m, and escaped down Coire Eich out of a ferocious wind. We were very hopefull when we set out on Sunday 22nd September 2013, and this time we did at least make the first of our objectives, An Caisteal, but once again the wind and rain prevented us making it onto Beinn a'Chroin, but at least this was an improvement on the two previous attempts.
Like terriers at the ankles of the postman, we never give up, and so Saturday saw us on the hillside once again in attempt number 4 to get a group around the circuit. And here is my report - sorry if it sounds a bit familiar:
Winds 45-50mph gusting to 60mph - Wind Chill -1 degree - Very Heavy Rain - Aborted at 900m - Escaped via Coire Eich.
Just another August day on An Caisteal
